For St. George's Day - G.K. Chesterton

ELEGY IN A COUNTRY CHURCHYARD
The men that worked for England
They have their graves at home:
And birds and bees of England
About the cross can roam.

But they that fought for England,
Following a falling star,
Alas, alas for England
They have their graves afar.

And they that rule in England,
In stately conclave met,
Alas, alas for England
They have no graves as yet.

In respect of our current political class, the last verse is unfortunately true - but there are those of us willing to give them a helping hand........................

I've got a shovel. Not sure if they deserve a cross over their graves, though.

It is like being under Occupation. William Hague once told us in 2001 Let me take you on a journey to a foreign land

Now we've arrived he's certainly not doing much to get us out of it.

jic: shovels are out - AK47s and hemp are in! Reason: they dig their own graves first........

TT: Actually that speech of Hague's was one of his finest I thought - but I take your point!
