A young green shoot

Following the departure of Liam Fox and the subsequent reshuffle with Philip Hammond going to Defence and Justine Greening to Transport, one further appointment does not appear to have received that much publicity, although having said that two short articles have appeared in the press; namely the Mail and a local newspaper, the Norwich Evening News. I refer to the appointment of Chloe Smith to the position of Economic Secretary to the Treasury.

This young lady, whose career has been mainly spent working for the Conservative Party, other than a brief spell with Deloitte Touche as a 'management consultant', has had a meteoric rise since becoming a Member of Parliament in 2009 aged 27. Previously, on leaving school she had taken a gap-year working for former Conservative education secretary Gillian Shephard and then went on to the University of York where she read English Literature and also undertook summer work for Bernard Jenkin.

When considering the appointment of politicians to areas of responsibility, one does have to question moving someone (Greening) with a background in economics to transport where she has none; moving someone with a PPE (Hammond) with no background in transport to another area in which it appears he has no background, namely defense. Then we come to Chloe Smith, whose background is mainly in politics, who read English Literature and worked briefly as a management consultant, who would appear to have little or no background in economics, to the Treasury department.

One does have to wonder what experience or qualifications Chloe Smith has to fill such an important position in government and to also wonder how she has 'managed', within two years of first being elected, to now be knocking on the door of the cabinet at the tender age of 29. Heaven help us - as one comment said in the Mail - the ink is hardly dry on her birth certificate!

There is nothing in her CV to suggest she has anything worthwhile to contribute, but as the government doesn't do "worthwhile" it doesn't seem to matter.

Agree WfW though that Mail article is not entirely flattering on Chloe. Almost like someone briefing the paper along the lines of "we'll stop the jumped up Chloe."

"Attends gay pride marches but is known to have had boyfriends? " Now what are they suggesting?

"I was surprised and proud to be asked to do the job." - Oh really???

"I see it as an opportunity to serve my country but also to take what Norwich and the wider area needs right to the heart of Westminster."

But supposing the good people of Norwich North decide they would rather NOT be part of the EU? That would conflict with Government priorities - she's a whip, after all...

"A short boyish haircut"
"In favour of gay marriage"
"Is known to have had boyfriends"

"Now what are they suggesting?"

I really can't imagine...

AKH: Most definitely agreed!

TBF & md: I see you have both picked up on one or two aspects which I had noticed but which, as I don't do innuendo (heh!) I thought I would leave others to raise........

It seems a government post is the only one where you need fcuk all experience in the area (health, education, defence, etc.) that you are the head honcho in. Politics is a playground for the self appointed 'elite' (and I'm not anti money or anti free market). They know fcuk all about fcuk all and take our money by force to play with.

They will pay dearly for what they have done - and continue to do - to our beloved England.

Chloe Smith has just increased her market value to Deloittes. She was no doubt recruited to be warehoused as a Conservative MP and ready to dispense contacts and contracts whenever possible.

The seamless world of KPMG and PwC on privatisation and government work started with Thatcher; Deloittes has acquired enough specialist firms to get contracts no doubt in MoD etc.

PA Consulting had a nice line under Heseltine and McKinsey did well with Norman Blackwell and William Hague. Truth is there is not enough private sector work to sustain these bloated firms.

The best hope is the EU Commission proposal to split Consulting from Accounting firms.

Chloe Smith is paying off for Deloittes and that is the sole purpose of Government - to provide, as in the 18th Century, patronage and favours

Greening will be glad to get away to Transport where she mightnt have to explain things like 'credit easing' to people like Andrew Neill again.

Well I don't wish to be seen as casting aspersions but I did assume on first seeing her photograph that they had mistakenly used the picture of a young man.

Anyhow, I think the reason for her appointment is most likely she can be relied on to say nothing, do nothing and touch nothing, too much boat rocking is happening already.

Is it okay to say 'I really couldn't give a flying (insert expletive)' about any of the 'musical chairs' that passes for changes in governance?

There said it anyway.

Anon: True - and nicely put!

TT: Were this Chloe Smith's blog no doubt she could have said "Touche"?

Anon (2): Yes, but I can't wait for Andrew Neil to quiz her on the benefits of HS2 - we could then use the description of car/train crash in motion.......

PC: Re paragraph one: never stopped you before :)

Re paragrah two: spot on for the reasons of her appt!

Bill: As ever, most succinct on your part.......

Our political class has long since become a careerist one. The earlier these wet behind the ears careerists get going the greater the potential riches.
This Oldrightie despairs of their weak characters, selfish ambition and lack of any experience other than sycophancy.
We need a senate of elder states people. We did have one once but that Upper House fell to the class warriors of the left's destructive ideology.

Or: It is because the entire system is corrupt - and those in it - is why I want them gone, permanently!

With her gruff appearance and stated belief in gay marriage, no wonder our lefty premier gave her the job. All Labour could come up with was the basso-profundo, but sadly married, Ruth Kelly.
