There can be only one of two cures.........

In this post one commenter said:
"It is also somewhat unfair to Cameron to suggest he is lying about being eurosceptic. The MSM reported that he was and he even claimed he was himself, but he never claimed he was in favour of exit or even radical change. It may have sounded like it but he didn't say it."
You know what? Actually, he's right and what I cannot understand is how the Conservative Party has managed to sell itself to the electorate as Eurosceptic. I have been listening again to Cameron's leadership bid speech (which can be accessed here and then follow the link) and rereading his European policy speech of November 2009 when he admitted he could not deliver a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

From his leadership speech it is worth mentioning some extracts:
"This party does care about the weak, about the vulnerable...."
but at the expense of providing foreign aid. When he did mention the EU it was but to criticise the Labour government:
"....that has passed power to a European Union that nobody trusts....."
yet by every word and deed Cameron continues to accept their 'superiority' where governance of this nation is concerned. Mentioning the Conservatives failure in three general elections, he stated:
"....as we put failure behind us, as we put defeat behind us, we must say never, ever again."
so yet again we have another failed aspiration in that Cameron was unable to score when presented with an open Labour goal and thus failed to achieve a majority in the House of Commons.
"I love my country, I love our people, our history, our traditions, our character...."
in which case,  bearing in mind his stated belief in subservience to the European Union, he sure is going a funny way about showing that belief......

Echoing probably the greatest disciple of Thatcherism, Keith Joseph - and paraphrasing one of Joseph's greatest beliefs - Cameron states:
"....this party is the only party that believes if you give people power, more freedom and more responsibility, they become stronger...."
yet, as exampled within the Localism Bill, the Recall Bill and the Referendum Lock Bill, he shows his true belief in central government control.

Finally, probably the 'daddy of them all' where promises are concerned:
"There will be no false starts, no turning one way and then turning another......"
a statement which makes a mockery of the fact that 'U' turns seem to be 'all the rage' in present Cameron Conservative policy........

Turning to his infamous "Lisbon Treaty" speech Cameron said:
"We will give the British people a referendum lock to which only they should hold the key......It is not politicians’ power to give away – it belongs to the people........It is about an assurance that the final word on our laws is here in Britain......."
which, if he was honest, would mean Cameron would have to mark "failed" on his own report card. It is not the British people who hold the key; politicians continue to cede powers to the European Union and the final word on laws still does not rest with Britain.

Returning to the comment quoted above, with which some may well agree, Cameron stands guilty in that he has allowed the "shoe-kissing/licking" MSM to perpetuate the myth that he is Eurosceptic without having the honesty and principle to correct them.

For someone who started life at the top of the "social pile", it amazes me that the GBP accept Cameron - and those like him, namely MiliE & Clegg - who continually inform the electorates that they, the political elite, understand their fears, needs and aspirations. Just what the hell do those 'born with a silver spoon' know of what the GBP think and want?

I can but repeat (and sorry for 'banging-on') we do indeed live under a system of democratised dictatorship - and the sooner we rebel, either peacefully or using lamp posts, the bloody better!

Almost a perfect copy of Blair's Conference Speech as he tugged the Union Flag c. 1996 and had people like Max Hastings voting for him !

I can only re-iterate, don't listen to what they say, look at what they do. It is amazing, if not horrifying, just how much sheer dishonesty that simple exercise exposes.

As to why people believe these carefully crafted disingenuous little façades, not only do people only listen and not look they often hear what they want to hear. Which is very easy to do when politicians are as facile as Cameron and Blair in making statements that can be taken to mean almost anything, even exact opposites. Or use long, convoluted constructions that imply an opinion but don't ever say it explicitly, as your quotes clearly demonstrate.

The only mystery is that they continue to only hear what they want to hear long past the point where it would be obvious to a dead parrot they were being gulled.

I enjoyed this post. Thinking Mr Cameron a past master at substituting sound for substance, I could not resist interpolating a few jaundiced clarifications ...

"....as we put failure behind us, as we put defeat behind us, we must say never, ever again."
And then carry on with more of the same.

"I love my country, I love our people, our history, our traditions, our character...."
But I wouldn't let my pet make policy.

"....this party is the only party that believes if you give people power, more freedom and more responsibility, they become stronger...."
So we certainly aren't going to do that.

"There will be no false starts, no turning one way and then turning another......"
No, everything we do we will do deliberately.

PeterCharles has it nailed. I never read, let alone analyse political speeches.
