It obviously pays to be in the 'Club'

On a previous post about Lord Slime one commenter questioned which politicians and advisers worked for Leon Brittan in Brussels and could it be both are very close to Cameron?

A little research shows that the following have all worked for Leon Brittan during his time as an EU Commissioner:

Robert Madelin:   2010 -   Director-General for Information Society the European Institutions and Media; 2004 - 2010: Director-General for Health and Consumer Protection; 1997 - 2003: Director in DG Trade;1993 - 1997: Member, then Deputy Head, of Cabinet to Sir Leon (now Lord) Brittan, Vice-President European Commission;1979-1992: British Civil Service, serving mainly in London
and Brussels.

Simon Fraser: Permanent Under Secretary and Head of the Diplomatic Service, the senior foreign policy adviser to the Foreign Secretary, and responsible for the management of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London and our Embassies and High Commissions around the world. Before taking on the role Simon was the Permanent Secretary of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in London since June 2009. Prior to this he was Director General for Europe and Globalisation in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. From 2004 to February 2008, Simon was Chief of Staff to European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson. He was closely involved in negotiation of the Doha Round and in formulating the EU’s external competitiveness policies. Simon also previously worked as Deputy Chief of Staff to Leon Brittan when he was Trade Commissioner.

Martin Donnelly: Joined the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills as Permanent Secretary in October 2010. Prior to this, he was acting Permanent Secretary at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) from May to August 2010, guiding the department through the first months of the new government. At the end of 2009 he led the Cabinet Office review which produced the Smarter Government Report and in 2008-09 was on secondment to Ofcom as Senior International Partner.  He has also been a member of the personal staff of Leon Brittan, then European Commission Vice President, and been on secondment to the French Finance Ministry.

Nick Clegg: Deputy Prime Minister 2010; 2005: Elected MP for Sheffield Hallam; 1999: Elected MEP for East Midlands; 1996-1999: chief of staff to Sir Leon Brittan, the Tory European commissioner.

I suppose you can't get much closer to Cameron than the last named? Unless of course your christian name happens to be Samantha!

Have you seen this :-

A ‘shameful’ alliance of former Eurocrat peers who get EU pensions of up to £100,000 a year – which they have not disclosed in the UK Parliament – were criticised last night for sabotaging an attempt by the Coalition to curb the power of Brussels.

An all-party clique of ‘big beast’ politicians and diplomats, many of whom have held lucrative posts in Europe, inflicted a series of defeats on the Government’s EU Bill in the Lords in the past two weeks by just a handful of votes.
