Tobacco and plain packaging

So having in opposition opposed a display ban on tobacco products, the Coalition are to perform another 'U' turn and impose one. What a surprise - not!

The NDS website announces the changes and Simon Clark has an excellent rebuttal on Conservative Home.

Of course, it cannot have anything to do with attempting to pre-empt the result of this consultation - could it?

I am a lifelong non-smoker, but I’ve never been comfortable with these attacks on smokers.

I was once party to a management team decision to ban all smoking within our premises. I was the only one round the table who opposed the ban and pointed out that smokers were also colleagues.

Nobody was interested. Once safely stowed away within a majority, even people who think they are reasonable can be appallingly intolerant.

As we see only too often in Parliament and our local authorities!
