Spoken like a true politician - one with principles

From Open Europe's press summary for today we learn that the True Finns have refused to join the government and will thus remain the largest party in opposition, as a result of the Finnish parliaments decision to support the bail-out of Portugal. Timo Soini is quoted thus:
"It would have been nice to be part of the government but you cannot betray yourself."
It is indeed heartening to know that at least one politician and his supporters believe in principle, something noticeable in this country by its absence. I do have to wonder what Cameron and Clegg thought when they heard/read this.

Just asking, you understand.......................

What the arseholes who supposedly serve us fail to realise is that when the history of this time comes to be written, when sufficient time lends a degree of impartiality, they will be forever seen to be the inconsequential, self-serving, mendacious money-grubbers that they are. What a way to be remembered. I suspect they don't care and that epitomises how venal and low-intellect they are. I don't know anything about Timo Soini but I suspect history will be kinder to him.

I don't know, but it's a better line than any they are likely to come up with.

Why John in Cheshire thinks politicians are supposed to "serve" us eludes me. Politics is about Power. It is simply you have opportunity to take part in a pageant and place your illiterate cross in a box nothing more. Stalin allowed his peasants that pleasure.

The system is about Power and Control. The fact that is is exercised more nakedly than previously should not blind you to the fact that it was simply more discreet and less brash in the past.

David Kelly crossed people and was eliminated. Read up on Sir Reginald Manningham-Buller as Attorney General under Macmillan and how LCJ and AG and PM met to arrange special sentencing for George Blake outside the parameters......

or how Victor Grayson MP disappeared without trace for accusing Lloyd George of corruption

This is hardball

jic: Agree.

AKH: Agreed

TT: Understand your comment - however it is essential that the situation re power is reversed and that politicos accept they are our servants.

On that we are both agreed ! My point is simply that we may have to accept that training politicians to be responsive may involve extirpating a few of them.

As Voltaire put it so aptly with respect to Admiral Byng..... "dans ce pays-ci, il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres"

TT: No argument from me with your solution - been calling for that for yonks!
