I think that's a bit unfair on Mac, he had a very good education and made use of it, he also served with distinction in the Grenadier guards and was wounded in combat, so, as far as I am concerned, there can be no comparison.
I agree entirely with the two comments preceding. He and his government also understood the need to maintain balanced, properly equipped and trained armed forces not subject to the interference of politicians, single issue campaigners and the bias of the news media...
"balanced, properly equipped and trained armed forces". Hmmm. Read the history of the Suez debacle. It took nearly 6 months even to deploy. Paradoxically the Tories have nearly always screwed up the armed forces but been lovely to the NHS, with Labour the other way round.
WfW, yes and Macmillan had been British Liaison to Eisenhower in North Africa, so he must have been really surprised after encouraging Eden over Suez to find Eisenhower and Dulles quite so upset !!! LOL
Then poor Eden had to go and rest at Ian Fleming's house......
Macmillan had his faults - he thought Britain was finished, but as from 1960s we had easy credit to make us great again ! Interest rates never hit double digits until Edward Heath....1694-1972

Grenadier guards and was wounded in combat,
and spent half hour in No Man's Land wounded waiting for a stretcher-bearer whilst reading Classical Greek poetry.
Macmillan had style and substance

Anon, TT & TGM: Be that as it may, Supermac was also perfectly willing to take us into the EEC and for that I do not forgive and forget.
SW: Tend to agree.
