Having spent 1½ hours this afternoon watching David Cameron appearing before the House of Commons Liaison Committee, I have come to the conclusion that all the participants deserve an Bafta nomination for the manner in which they played their parts. For those interested in his response to questions about Europe, which luckily was the first topic, the video can be seen here (there is a gap of about 5 minutes very early on when they all had to respond to a division bell).
Personally, I believe Cameron was given an "easy ride", especially by Bill Cash whose questions as usual were too long, too convoluted and provided Cameron opportunities to not answer the question posed. Why was Cameron not pressed on his reasons for his belief that membership of the EU is in this country's best interest? Why was Cameron not pressed on his refusal to allow an in/out referendum? Why was Cameron not pressed on his - and past governments - refusal to provide an independent cost/benefit analysis of membership, while pointing out that the benefits are not obvious? Why was Cameron not pressed on what, exactly, is his definition of 'fiscal union' as there is 'fiscal union' and 'fiscal union'. Why was Cameron not pressed on the matter of his belief he governs this country, when it is obvious that he does not and cannot?
Following the screening it will indeed be interesting to observe whether there remains any journalists who still have the gall to describe Cameron as a Eurosceptic because any such ideas they may have entertained must now have been completely shattered.
